Skin Receptors

When you pet a cat, feel the warm sun on your face, or hold an ice cubem your skin is acting as a sensory organ. Your skin contains five kinds sensory receptors. These are all sensitive to different types of feelings (stimulus): touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold. These help us to avoid injury, enjoy our environment, find our way around, and perform a wide variety of tasks, from playing basketball to painting.
